Armed Police and Section 60 Order Deployed to Stop Violence at Appleby Horse Fair
Police are cracking down hard on looming violence at this year’s Appleby Horse Fair. Officers have announced a Section 60 order, giving them tough new powers to stop troublemakers in their tracks. Armed police will also be patrolling the area to keep the peace.
Serious Fears Over Violence as Feuding Groups Gather
Superintendent Matt Kennerley warned that multiple groups are expected to travel to Appleby with plans to cause serious violence amid ongoing feuds.
“The police have information that there are a number of groups intending to travel to Appleby Horse Fair this weekend intent on causing serious violence as part of on-going feuds between different groups. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said Supt Kennerley.
In response, police are upping their presence in key areas at critical times.
Section 60 Powers Kick In
The Section 60 order, under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, started at 9.30am on 14 August and runs until 12.30am the following day.
- It covers a specific area around Appleby.
- Allows officers to stop and search anyone without the need for suspicion.
- Armed officers will be on hand to respond swiftly to any incidents.
Supt Kennerley stressed these measures aim to protect everyone attending the Fair, urging anyone with info on potential trouble to come forward.
“These powers will help our officers to keep people safe. However, I also urge anyone with information about potential disorder or any other type of criminality to contact the police. Anyone who is seeking to come to the Fair to act violently is no friend to those of us – including Appleby people and the Gypsy and Traveller people – who wish for the Horse Fair to be an enjoyable and safe environment for all.”
