Extinction Rebellion Blockades News Corp Printing Presses
Thirteen protesters have been arrested as Extinction Rebellion causes chaos at two of News Corporation’s main printing presses. The blockades have stopped a slew of newspapers from hitting the stands on Saturday.
Police Locked In Standoff With 100 Strong Protesters
Officers from Hertfordshire have been on Great Eastern Road, Waltham Cross, since about 10pm last night after a call reported the protest. Around 100 activists remain on site, refusing to engage with police.
Major Disruption To Local Businesses
Assistant Chief Constable Owen Weatherill said: “The rights to protest are well established in this country and we remain committed to facilitating peaceful protest and ensuring compliance. However, at this time, the group are not engaging with us and the protest is causing major disruption to local businesses. At this time, 13 people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and we anticipate more arrests will be made. I’d like to reassure you that we are doing all we can to bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion, ensuring minimum disruption to the affected businesses.”
Police vow to keep the peace and make further arrests as the standoff drags on.
