Chaos at South London House Party as Police Called for Robbery
Robbery Leads Police to Raucous 30-Strong Party
In the early hours of Sunday, 28 February, cops rushed to Portland Street, SE17 after a man was mugged by two males who snatched his phone. The chase led officers to a packed house party on Hopwood Road.
Arriving at 5.30am, officers expected suspects — instead, they found 30 revellers throwing a wild party. Things quickly turned hostile.
Out of Control: Officers Attacked and Injured
As police tried to ID suspects and shut down the bash, partygoers launched drinks and objects at them. Eight officers suffered injuries, including one knocked unconscious and another suspected of a broken hand.
For safety, cops pulled back and called for backup, then controlled the crowd’s exit, fining every attendee £800.
Multiple Arrests Made in Connection to Theft and Violence
- A 17-year-old male spotted leaving was arrested on suspicion of robbery.
- A 19-year-old man caught with the stolen phone was arrested for handling stolen goods.
- A 19-year-old woman was held for violent disorder and assaulting an officer.
- Another 17-year-old female was arrested for violent disorder and handling stolen goods after being found with multiple debit and oyster cards bearing different names.
All four were taken into custody and later bailed to return in late March.
Police Slam Partygoers for Ignoring COVID Rules and Attacking Officers
Chief Inspector Richard Blears blasted the party, saying: “Restrictions are still in place to protect lives; every person who attended this illegal gathering has acted selfishly and irresponsibly and has potentially put others at risk.”
“Not only that, but some have even gone as far as physically harming the officers who attended the scene, which is totally unacceptable.
“We will continue to enforce breaches of Covid-19 restrictions when they are alerted to us.”
