Exclusive:Isle of Wight Prison Officers off to tackle Six Hundred Prisoners Rioting at HMP Birmingham

IT is understood that these officers will be part of the third phase to be come in teams from Risley,Onley, Bullingdon and Liverpool have already been sent to the prison. West Midlands Police says disorder at HMP Birmingham is contained within the prison walls and specially-trained officers are responding Fire clearly visible, with reports of trapped prisoners calling for help due to the smoke inside the prison The incident began just after 9am at the Victorian category B jail run by privately owned security company G4S in Winson Green, with inmates reportedly stealing a set of keys from guards. G4S Managing director for custodial and detention services, Jerry Petherick, said: “Given the scale of this incident and deployment of national resources, we have agreed that the overall operational responsibility for the response will transfer to the Prison Service with immediate effect. “Our command team remains on site and our staff will be actively involved in the recovery of the affected wings.” West Midlands Police has moved to reassure nearby residents that disorder is contained within the prison walls. The Prison Service is leading the response to the disorder with specially-trained West Midlands Police officers playing a support role and offering visual reassurance around the perimeter. Birmingham Police Commander Richard Moore, said: “At this stage there are no West Midlands Police officers inside the prison. This operation will be led by the Prison Service and its specialist teams which are well-drilled in tackling such situations. “The disorder is contained inside the perimeter of HMP Birmingham…no offenders have breached the perimeter. “This is a dynamic situation and our officers may be called to respond in a support role as the situation unfolds.” The Prison Officers Association, the union representing prison workers, said in a statement: “Leaders of the POA have once again been made aware of a serious incident within our Prison System. Currently the whole facts surrounding the incident at HMP Birmingham are not known. “National Resources have been deployed to deal with this incident involving approximately 300 prisoners within 2 Prison Wings. No staff injuries have been reported and staff are currently monitoring the situation and awaiting national support, through mutual aid. “This is another stark warning to the Ministry of Justice that the Service is in crisis.” Fire engines are currently posted outside the prison which can hold 1,450 adult men.
