A 38 year-old man from Norfolk and a 16 year-old from Doncaster have today been sentenced after they attacked three ATM’s using explosions and then led police on a high speed pursuit

In March this year, the men targeted ATMs in Shepshed, Leicestershire, Adwick near Doncaster and Starbeck in Harrogate. Their highly dangerous methods of causing explosions in order to access the cash put the safety of local residents and business owners at risk, as well as causing huge amounts of damage to these vital community services.

The men used a stolen vehicle to commit the offences and when spotted by police near York, led officers on a high-speed pursuit – putting many road users lives at risk. They thought they’d got away after crashing the vehicle at the York Designer Outlet and making off into the countryside but were quickly spotted hiding in a tree trunk by the NPAS helicopter and subsequently arrested by officers on foot.

Frederick Squires of Castleacre Road, Swaffham, Norfolk was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison and was disqualified from driving for 7 years and 3 months, whilst the 16 year-old received a two-year detention and training order.

North Yorkshire Police Detective Superintendent, Fran Naughton, said:

“The sentences given to these two individuals today are a clear demonstration that this type of crime will not be tolerated, either in North Yorkshire or across the country. This has been an extensive investigation, supported through SaferCash and the companies affected by these crimes with many lines of enquiry progressed to ensure these offenders face the consequences of their actions. I would like to thank everyone who played a role in securing a successful outcome for this case.”
