A 22-year-old drugged driver from Sandfields, Neath Port Talbot, has been jailed for smashing into and killing a former council leader in a shocking crash.

Tragic Death on Port Talbot’s Water Street

Zack Mason hit 85-year-old Thomas “Noel” Crowley as he crossed Water Street on December 7, 2024. Crowley died three days later in hospital, leaving locals stunned and grieving.

Drugs, No Licence, No Insurance – Danger on the Roads

Police arrested Mason at the scene. Tests showed he had 2.3 microgrammes of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol per litre of blood — way above the legal limit. Even worse, Mason was driving without a licence or insurance. His provisional licence had been revoked in 2022 after a previous insurance offence.

Four Years Inside and Seven-Year Driving Ban

Mason admitted causing death by careless driving under the influence, plus driving unlicensed and uninsured. He’s now been locked up for four years and slapped with a seven-year driving ban. Before he can get back on the road, he’ll have to pass an extended driving test.
