Prison Break Chaos at HMP Sudbury Sparks Fury from Missing Woman’s Mother

Another Escape Rocks HMP Sudbury

The mum of missing Scottish woman Lisa Brown has slammed the shocking prison break at HMP Sudbury. Helen Jordan branded the latest escape “absolutely disgraceful” after another inmate fled the so-called open prison, raising big questions about its security.

Repeated Failures Stir Outrage

Last year, Helen’s world turned upside down when Dean Woods, jailed for drug trafficking and suspected in her daughter Lisa’s disappearance, also absconded from HMP Sudbury. Woods was finally caught this year in Germany. But Helen is furious this isn’t an isolated case. She said:

“It’s absolutely disgraceful that this is still happening in this so-called prison. Yet again, more police resources are being used to catch these criminals. There should be a major inquiry about what’s going on here.”

HMP Sudbury – History and Security Gaps

HMP Sudbury was born as a US Air Force hospital during the D-Day landings before turning into a Category D prison in 1948. Its setup includes 18 dormitories housing 10 to 32 prisoners each, plus 80 temporary ‘pod’ units with ensuite facilities added in 2020. Two new blocks set to open by the end of 2023 will add space for 60 more inmates.

Absconds Skyrocket Despite Security Reviews

A recent report deemed Sudbury’s security “proportionate” for an open jail, but pulled no punches on the absconding problem. The prison logged 11 escapes in 12 months, over 20 in two years—higher than most open prisons. Investigations into each break have been done, and authorities are now reviewing the abscond strategy to tackle known risk spots.

Serious Questions Remain

This string of escapes follows a 2021 case that led to a three-year jail sentence for one absconder, highlighting serious management and security flaws. Prison bosses must act fast with thorough investigations and proper measures to stop the revolving door of runaways.
