Travel Warning: Britons Given Turkey Travel Warning as Some Areas are Off-Limits Due to ‘Heightened Risk’

British holidaymakers have been issued a warning about traveling to Turkey, with several areas deemed too dangerous due to various risks, including terrorism and the ongoing conflict in Syria. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice, emphasizing the importance of adhering to these guidelines to ensure travel insurance validity.

The FCDO has specifically advised against all travel within 10km of the border with Syria, citing continuous fighting and a significant terrorism threat. Roads in Hatay Province leading towards the Syrian border may also be closed due to the conflict.

Additionally, travel to Sirnak city and Hakkari Province should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. The FCDO states that these areas also present a heightened risk of terrorism. Those who must travel to these regions are urged to exercise extreme caution.

For those planning to visit Mount Ararat in Ağrı Province, special permissions are required as it is a designated military zone. Travelers must secure a permit from the Doğubayazıt government office and pay a fee at the local Governor’s Office. Tourists are advised to verify whether individual permits are needed when visiting with a tour group.

The British government has reminded tourists to stay vigilant as attacks can occur randomly, including in places frequented by foreigners such as public buildings, places of worship, and during major public gatherings.

Before travelling , the FCDO urges Britons to consult its guidance for information on visa requirements, customs rules, and advice for specific groups including women, LGBT+ travelers, and those with disabilities. Tourists are encouraged to follow FCDO travel updates on social media and sign up for email notifications for the latest travel advice.

Travel insurance that covers the itinerary, planned activities, and potential emergency expenses is crucial for anyone traveling to Turkey. The FCDO’s guidance provides essential information that tourists need to be aware of to ensure a safe and informed trip.
