A two-year-old girl is in hospital with serious facial injuries after being bitten multiple times by a dog in a Rustington park. The unprovoked attack took place in Brookfield Park, West Sussex, at approximately 3:30pm on Sunday, June 15.
According to Sussex Police, the child was mauled by a small, dark-coloured terrier-type dog, which was not accompanied by an owner or handler at the time. The toddler sustained injuries to her nose, lips, and cheek and is currently undergoing treatment.
Police Appeal: ‘Do You Recognise This Dog?’
The force has launched an investigation and is urging the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the dog or its possible owner. Officers have confirmed no person was seen with the dog during the incident, which has raised serious concerns about public safety in the area.
“Did you witness the incident? Do you have any information that could help identify the dog or its owner?” Sussex Police asked in a public statement on Monday.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Concern
The incident has shocked the local community, with many expressing concern over the presence of uncontrolled dogs in public parks. Parents and dog walkers have been urged to remain vigilant, particularly in Brookfield Park and surrounding areas.
Police are reviewing local CCTV and speaking with residents in an effort to trace the terrier-like dog responsible.
