Brighton & Hove’s iconic Brunswick Square and Brunswick Terrace are finally getting a fresh lick of paint this year. After a long search, the council has signed off on a new paint colour specially made to match the Grade I listed buildings’ original look.

‘Brunswick Cream’ to Restore Regency Charm

Brighton & Hove City Council worked with experts and Crown Paints to develop “Brunswick Cream,” a water-based masonry paint made to stand up to the tough coastal conditions. The shade closely mirrors the original finish, preserving the seafront’s distinctive Regency style.

Back to Five-Year Repainting Cycle

Repainting of these historic beauties will now happen every five years again, scrapping the extended six-year gap used during the COVID pandemic. This move follows Crown Paints’ guidance and ensures the buildings stay in tip-top shape against salt and sea spray.

Property Owners Face Legal Duty to Keep Up Appearances

Thanks to the Hove Borough Council Act 1976, owners in Brunswick Square and Terrace must legally repaint their buildings, including masonry, railings, and balconies, every five years. This keeps the iconic seafront looking sharp and well-protected.

This repaint project aims not just to beautify but to shield Brighton’s seafront heritage from the harsh marine environment for years to come.
