Britain is facing fresh pressure to clamp down on Tehran’s alleged intelligence operations right under its nose. Press TV, Iran’s state-backed English-language broadcaster based in London, is under fire for reportedly running spy activities while spreading hateful content aimed at Britain’s Jewish community.
Press TV: Front for Espionage and Antisemitism?
Security experts claim the broadcaster uses its London studio not just for TV shows but to recruit agents for Iranian intelligence. The Community Security Trust (CST), which protects British Jews, slammed Press TV’s flagship show Palestine Declassified as “the most antisemitic media currently produced in this country.”
A CST spokesperson said: “In every episode they pick a topic and highlight large numbers of ordinary Jewish organisations, charities, schools and individuals. They paint them all as genocidal, Zionist extremists who are infiltrating Britain. It is a clear example of the Iranian state inciting hatred of Jews and trying to cause division in British society.”
The programme is hosted by Chris Williamson, the ex-Labour MP suspended for downplaying antisemitism, alongside David Miller, an academic who won a discrimination case after being sacked for anti-Zionist views.
Intelligence Insider Warns of Espionage Risks
Jonathan Hackett, a former US Marine Corps intelligence officer, revealed that some Press TV journalists act as “talent spotters” for Iran, hunting for recruits in plain sight before passing them to Iranian handlers.
“From an Iranian perspective, London is a permissive environment,” Hackett told The Telegraph. “Press TV not only has done clandestine work using these credentials but they also openly do things.”
With sanctions choking Iran’s operations elsewhere, the London studio has become even more vital for Tehran’s intelligence. The US Treasury declared Press TV a tool used to “recruit sensitive assets, including US persons.”
Hackett highlighted the defection of Monica Witt, a former US Air Force counter-intelligence expert, as Tehran’s “bombshell” coup, underscoring the real dangers.
Press TV Thrives Despite Bans
Though Press TV lost its Ofcom licence in 2012 and got banned on YouTube, it still commands over a million followers on Instagram, Facebook, and X. The UK Government insists it’s tackling the threat.
A government spokesperson said: “We are clear-eyed about the threats posed by Iran, and our first priority is protecting British interests and British lives both in the UK and overseas. We have introduced a comprehensive set of additional measures aimed at countering threats posed by the Iranian regime.”
With allegations mounting, Britain must decide how far Tehran will be allowed to push its sinister influence on home soil.
