Madalin Ghiuzan, a 23-year-old man originally from Romania, has been charged with assaulting a Canadian tourist in central Dublin. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 23 at Cathal Brugha Street and O’Connell Street Upper.
According to Garda Sergeant Sean McCarthy, Mr. Ghiuzan was with friends on Cathal Brugha Street when the injured party, believed to be in his 40s, approached him. The two had no prior contact but engaged in a conversation before two alleged assaults took place.
The injured party never regained consciousness and was rushed to Mater Hospital. His condition is currently serious, and authorities are closely monitoring it. Should it deteriorate, more serious charges may be brought against Mr. Ghiuzan.
During the court hearing at Dublin District Court, Judge Paul Kelly he refused bail for Mr Ghiuzan due to the seriousness of the alleged offences and concerns about flight risk. The accused has been living in Ireland for five years and resides with a family member. He does not pay rent or a mortgage and lacks significant ties to the State.
In a related development, a man in his 30s was arrested this afternoon in connection with the assault. This marks the third arrest made as part of the ongoing investigation.
Gardaí are urging any witnesses to come forward with information regarding the incident.
