Emergency services have rushed to the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba — one of Spain’s most iconic historic landmarks — after a fire broke out at the UNESCO World Heritage Site on Friday 8th August 2025.
Smoke was seen rising from the western section of the complex, which is officially known as the Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba. Firefighters and police cordoned off the area as tourists and staff were evacuated. The cause of the fire remains unconfirmed, but local authorities say a full investigation is underway.
The blaze prompted a swift response from Córdoba’s fire brigade. Images on social media show plumes of smoke rising above the ancient structure, with reports of visible flames near one of the chapels.
No injuries reported so far
Initial reports suggest there have been no injuries, and emergency crews are working to bring the fire under control. The extent of the damage to the historic building remains unclear.
A spokesperson for Córdoba’s municipal government said:
“Our priority is the safety of everyone in the vicinity and the protection of one of our most important cultural and religious landmarks. We ask the public to avoid the area while emergency services respond.”

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, known locally as La Mezquita, is one of the most visited tourist sites in Spain. Originally constructed as a mosque in the 8th century during the Islamic rule of Al-Andalus, it was later converted into a Catholic cathedral in the 13th century following the Christian Reconquista.
The structure is famed for its unique blend of Islamic and Christian architecture, including its distinctive red-and-white horseshoe arches, ornate mihrab, and Renaissance nave.
Investigation and preservation efforts
Spain’s Ministry of Culture has dispatched heritage preservation experts to assess the possible structural and artistic damage. UNESCO officials have also been alerted due to the site’s World Heritage status.
Local sources suggest the fire may have started due to an electrical fault or construction work taking place in a restricted area, though this has not been officially confirmed.
