A major multi-agency emergency operation is underway on the River Thames this evening (Monday, 2 June) following reports of a person seen in the water near Chelsea Embankment.
The incident was first reported just after 7.30pm, triggering a large-scale response involving the London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, and the Metropolitan Police. The National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter was also deployed to support the search from above.
Fire crews dispatched a fire boat to the scene, while lifeboat teams from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) launched from central London to assist in the search operation. Witnesses have reported seeing multiple emergency vehicles along the embankment and a coordinated effort taking place on the river from reports of a person seen in the water.
A source at the scene for the London Fire Brigade confirmed:
“We were called at 7:36pm to reports of a person in the water near Chelsea Embankment. Crews, including our fire boat, are currently assisting in the search along with partners from other emergency services.”
The circumstances surrounding how the individual came to be in the river remain unclear at this stage.
Police officers have cordoned off areas along the riverbank as they work to establish the full details of the incident. Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area to allow emergency teams to carry out their work.
