Five fire engines and approximately 35 firefighters were dispatched to a fire in a ground-floor flat that was severely damaged by the fire.
A man was rescued from the fire by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, but he died at the scene.
Firefighters also rescued a woman from a nearby flat. She had smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
The Fire service was called at 9.52am, and the fire was out by 11.27am. Firefighters from Old Kent Road, Dockhead, Richmond, and Lambeth were dispatched to the scene.
Fire Investigation Team from the London fire brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service are investigating the fire.
