The attack occurred when British transport officers responded to a call for urgent assistance after a male, who was wanted for an assault on an officer and a member of the public, arrived at the railway station.

The incident unfolded in a series of events that began in Battle, where it is alleged that the male had assaulted a member of the public, his partner, and caused damage to a bus shelter. During this initial incident, a Sussex Police" link="linked" id="95035">Sussex Police officer was also assaulted, and the male fled the scene.
