Weston Super mare on Lockdown after Chemical Related arrest

A major armed cordon has been set up by Police who are guarding a cordon around four town centre streets in Weston-super-Mare this evening (Saturday) It is understood that the incident relates bomb-related arrest. People are unable to return to their homes within the ‘cordoned off’ area, while police have advised others inside the affected area to remain indoors with their doors locked. Police at the scene have remained tight-lipped over what they describe as an ‘ongoing serious incident’ but further details are anticipated shortly. Response Police officers, fire engines and ambulances are on the scene and an incident command centre has been established in Locking Road car park. People in the affected area have taken to social media to share snippets of information, with several speculating the arrest relates to the discovery of hazardous chemicals or bomb-making materials. An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said reports by other local media outlets which referred to armed police and a bomb disposal unit were untrue. It is thought at least one person has been arrested in connection with materials discovered in a flat on Baker Street. The police spokesman said: “At approximately 5.25pm today (July, 1) we were made aware of some potentially unstable chemicals at an address on Baker Street, Weston-super-Mare. As a precaution a cordon was established while specialist officers from the fire service assessed the situation before declaring it safe. “A 49-year-old man has been detained and is currently assisting us with our inquiries. “There is no information to suggest the incident is terrorist-related.
