A dangerous driver has been jailed after leading police on a pursuit in Newcastle which ‘put lives at risk’

Thomas Humphries drove through red lights and at excess speeds of up to 100mph, overtaking vehicles on the wrong side of the road in an attempt to evade arrest on April 22.

The pursuit began just after 11.50am, when the licence plates of a silver BMW car travelling on the Great North Road were found to be cloned.

Humphries was driving the vehicle and refused to stop, showing no regard for other road users in the Gosforth area.

The 19-year-old led officers on a pursuit which lasted around 10 minutes but was brought to an end back on the Great North Road as he headed towards Gosforth’s High Street.

Police were able to bring the silver BMW to a stop by boxing the vehicle in and preventing Humphries from escaping on foot.

Humphries, of Laith Road, Newcastle, was charged with dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

He pleaded guilty and was jailed at Newcastle Crown Court for 14 months, and was disqualified from driving for two years.
