An asylum seeker who claimed he filmed a savage rape on Brighton beach to “stop it” is now labelled a liar in court. Karin Al-Danasurt, 20, has been under the spotlight at Hove Crown Court as fresh claims toss doubt on his story.
Cynical Crime on Brighton Beach
Al-Danasurt, alongside co-defendants Ibrahim Alshafe, 25, and Abdulla Ahmadi, 26, stands accused of a brutal and “callous” attack on a woman in the early hours of October 4 last year. The Egyptian and Iranian nationals allegedly targeted the woman while she was alone and vulnerable after a girls’ night out. Prosecutors say Alshafe and Ahmadi repeatedly raped the woman while Al-Danasurt filmed the ordeal. Footage shown to the jury reportedly captures the woman falling twice during the attack.
Filming the Horror—or Playing a Part?
Al-Danasurt insists he recorded the incident to stop the abuse and defend himself. He told the court he also tried to physically intervene but was ignored. However, prosecutors slammed his account as a “pack of lies,” accusing him of putting on a “performance” to cover his true role.
“I suggest what you’ve done in your evidence is put on a performance with a string of lies to hide your true involvement,” said prosecutor Hanna Llewellyn-Waters KC. Al-Danasurt fired back: “What I said is totally the truth. I’m not lying.”
Further damning claims emerged when the prosecution questioned his tone in the videos, suggesting he found the attack “entertaining,” which he vehemently denied.
Denials and Damning Details
- Al-Danasurt denies spitting on or slapping the woman, despite accusations from co-defendant Ahmadi.
- He also denies laughing or encouraging the attack.
- Surprisingly, the court heard Al-Danasurt bought juice and croissants for the others after the attack and joined a barbecue with them 12 hours later.
- A selfie video showing him relaxed with filtered sunglasses at the barbecue was played in court.
- All three men lived at a Home Office-approved asylum seeker hotel in West Sussex.
Co-Defendant’s Version
Alshafe began giving evidence, claiming the victim approached the men first, kissed and touched them, and appeared sober and willing. He described the incident as consensual, saying the woman even invited them to have sex. The trial continues as the court tries to untangle a horrifying night with conflicting accounts and serious allegations.
