A former GP who abused his position of trust to assault patients during consultations has been sentenced to six years in prison.

A Wigan-based doctor has been jailed after being found guilty of multiple sexual assaults committed during medical appointments. Vijay Gaikwad, 44, of St Catherine’s Gardens in Lowton, was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court following a trial which exposed his repeated abuse of patients under his care.
“Gaikwad abused his position of trust in the most egregious manner, and today’s outcome reflects the seriousness of his actions. This sentencing will provide some sense of justice for the victims.”

DC Page also issued a message to others who may have experienced similar abuse:

“Time is no barrier when it comes to being sexually abused. No matter how long ago it was, or how old you were at the time, we will listen to you. We will support you, investigate, and act robustly against perpetrators.”

Community Response

The sentencing has sparked public discussion, with many questioning whether the six-year term reflects the gravity of the abuse. Gaikwad is now barred from practicing medicine and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
