Man charged after suspicious object discovered in Borehamwood

Detectives investigating the discovery of a suspicious object in Borehamwood have charged a man with attempted murder and explosive-related offences.

Police were called on Saturday, 16 August, after reports that a suspicious object had been found at an address in the Cowley Hill area.

Charges

On Thursday evening (21 August), Robert Kovacs, 38, of Tenby Road, Edgware, was charged with:

  • Attempted murder

  • Making an explosive substance with intent to endanger life or injure property

  • Doing an act with intent to cause an explosion likely to endanger life or injure property

Kovacs appeared in court this morning where he was remanded into custody. He is next due to appear at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 8 September.

Second arrest

A 38-year-old woman from Borehamwood was also arrested in connection with the incident. She has since been released on bail with strict conditions, while enquiries continue.

Police statement

Detective Inspector Caeva Taylor, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said:

“I understand that the news of this incident has caused concern among the local community. We believe this to be an isolated incident, involving parties known to one of the suspects, and there is no intelligence to suggest any wider threat to the public.

I’d like to take this opportunity to appeal to the public for any information that may assist our enquiries. If you remember noticing anything suspicious in the Cowley Hill area between Friday 15 August and Saturday 16 August, or have any information that may help, please contact us.”
