A 48-year-old man who conspired to commit female genital mutilation (FGM) on a young girl has had his prison sentence increased following a review under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.
Details of the Crime
The court heard that in June 2019, Emad Kaky arranged for a young girl to travel to Iraq where she was to undergo FGM and be forced into marriage. His plans were discovered by a witness, who helped the victim return to the UK and alerted police.
Kaky was convicted of conspiracy to commit FGM and forced marriage at Nottingham Crown Court.
Sentence Increased to Seven Years
Initially, Kaky was sentenced to four and a half years in prison on 3 October 2024. However, after being referred to the Court of Appeal for being unduly lenient, his sentence was increased to seven years on 24 January 2025.
Government Response
The Solicitor General, Lucy Rigby KC MP, praised the sentence increase, stating:
“FGM is a sickening crime, and this government is determined to stamp out the practice as part of our mission to halve violence against women and girls.
This offender intended to inflict grotesque physical and mental suffering upon a child. The court has rightly decided to increase his sentence to reflect the severity of his crime.”

This case marks a significant milestone in UK law enforcement, as it is the first successful prosecution for conspiracy to commit FGM.
