A Derby taxi robbery that escalated into a dramatic 100mph police pursuit through the city centre has resulted in a six-year prison sentence for the perpetrator.

Violent Derby Taxi Robbery Unfolds

Leonard David, 26, orchestrated the taxi robbery on Hartington Street during the early morning hours of October 28, 2024. According to court documents

David booked a taxi and immediately became confrontational upon entering the vehicle.

 

Escalation of Violence

The incident quickly turned violent when David began assaulting the driver, demanding money and repeatedly throwing punches. After the driver surrendered £10, David brandished a knife and issued death threats, demonstrating a calculated escalation of criminal behavior.

High-Speed Pursuit Through Derby

After forcing the driver out of the vehicle on Sitwell Street, David initiated what would become a dangerous pursuit through Derby’s busy streets. According to police the stolen Volkswagen Passat reached speeds between 90 and 100mph.

Public Safety Concerns

The high-speed chase, which threatened public safety, led through several pedestrianised areas and saw the suspect running multiple red lights. Police were forced to abandon the pursuit at Markeaton roundabout due to safety concerns.

Arrest and Sentencing

PC Natalie Morton, the lead investigator, emphasized the lasting impact on the taxi driver, who suffered both physical and financial consequences. The victim was unable to work while the damaged vehicle underwent repairs.

Legal Consequences

Derby Crown Court handed down the following sentence on January 16:

  • Six years imprisonment
  • Six-year driving ban
  • Requirement to pass an extended driving test after the ban
