The shocking murder trial of Derek Martin, 66, gets underway today at Lewes Crown Court in Brighton. Martin stands accused of killing Josh Bashford, 33, and his wife Chloe, 30. The couple’s bodies were found at their Newhaven home on June 9, 2023, leaving behind four young children.
Martin Admits Killing But Denies Murder
Martin, from Moulsecoomb Way, Brighton, has admitted to killing the Bashfords but denies murder charges. Instead, he has pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility. His defence claims his mental state at the time stopped him from making rational decisions or controlling his actions. If accepted, this could reduce the charge from murder to manslaughter under English law.
Three-Week Trial Under Dame Justine Thornton
The trial, expected to last up to three weeks, is being overseen by Dame Justine Thornton, known formally as Mrs Justice Thornton.
Community Mourns Josh and Chloe Bashford
The deaths of Josh and Chloe have devastated their family and local community. One friend described the couple as “the most incredible and loving parents.”
As the trial unfolds, the court will sift through the tragic facts to decide on the final legal verdict.
