Sussex Police are investigating two incidents of fraud involving impersonators claiming to be police officers in Littlehampton. The scammers targeted elderly victims in their 80s, using detailed personal information to deceive them into handing over large sums of money.

Scammers Pretend to Be Police Officers

In both cases, the impersonators contacted the victims by phone, claiming to be a Detective Sergeant or Superintendent involved in an investigation into counterfeit banknotes and fraudulent activity in the victims’ bank accounts. The fraudsters used the pretext of needing assistance to “investigate” the victims’ bank branch and personal finances.

Victims were instructed to withdraw large sums of money from their banks, under the guise that the cash would be checked for fraudulent serial numbers. Following this, a courier arrived at the victims’ homes to collect the cash for “further investigation.”
Stay alert and help protect vulnerable individuals from becoming victims of fraud.
