The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has provided an update on their investigation concerning the tragic death of Mikias Tekeste on July 15, 2023.
Mr. Tekeste had been arrested earlier that fateful day upon the discovery that he had been recalled to prison. Simultaneously, he was arrested under suspicion of possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply. He was subsequently transported to custody in Croydon, in a police vehicle.
Upon the review of CCTV footage from inside the police vehicle, following Mr. Tekeste’s passing, it became apparent that he had removed items from his clothing and ingested them.
Later that evening, he was discovered in his cell in an unwell state. Immediate first aid was administered, and an ambulance was summoned. Despite the valiant efforts of medical professionals, Mr. Tekeste regrettably succumbed.
In light of this matter, the IOPC has initiated a criminal investigation into two of the officers who were accompanying Mr. Tekeste in the police vehicle. They are being investigated for potential gross negligence manslaughter. Importantly, the IOPC’s inquiry has not unearthed any instances of inappropriate police use of force.
The demise of an individual while in custody or following police interaction is a grave concern and is viewed as such by the community. They demand a comprehensive investigation to establish the facts surrounding such incidents.
The Metropolitan Police is extending its full cooperation to the IOPC’s investigation, and our heartfelt sympathies go out to Mr. Tekeste’s family during this trying period.
It should be emphasized that the initiation of an investigation does not constitute a presumption of wrongdoing. Nevertheless, the officers will be placed on restricted duties for the duration of the inquiry.
