Blackheath Fireworks to Return on November 1 After Six-Year Hiatus

A beloved South London tradition is set to return this autumn, with Lewisham Council confirming that the Blackheath Fireworks display will go ahead on Friday, November 1, following a six-year absence.

The event, which last took place in 2018, was cancelled in subsequent years due to a combination of funding shortfalls, the Covid-19 pandemic, and more recently, the cost-of-living crisis.

From Cancellation to Comeback

Lewisham Council pulled funding for the display in 2019, citing a need to prioritise essential services over large-scale community events. Despite a community-led fundraiser reviving hopes for a 2020 return, the event was cancelled again due to pandemic restrictions.

For the past several years, the fireworks have remained off the calendar. But on July 17, the council confirmed the popular event would make its long-awaited comeback, thanks to external funding and private event partnerships.

The display will run from 4pm to 10.30pm and is expected to draw up to 30,000 people, pending final licensing approvals.

What to Expect in 2025

A London-based event organiser, Slammin Events, has submitted an application to host the evening, including:

  • A high-end fireworks show
  • Live and recorded music
  • Dance performances
  • On-site food, drink, and craft stalls
  • Alcohol sales between 4pm and 11pm

Further ticketing details and programming announcements are expected in September.

A Difficult Balancing Act

In recent years, Lewisham Council has emphasised the financial pressures behind the event’s cancellation, stating:

“During a cost-of-living crisis, we cannot justify spending money on community fireworks for just one night over vital services needed throughout the year.”

But with the return now confirmed, the council says it hopes the display will provide a much-needed sense of joy and community celebration amid continuing economic hardship.
