RNLI and Coastguard Launch Overnight Search Off Brighton Seafront

Emergency services were called to Brighton seafront late on Wednesday night (27 August) after reports of a person in the water east of Brighton Pier.

Brighton RNLI said they were first alerted at 23:03, with crews tasked to the scene alongside Brighton RNLI lifeboat and local Coastguard rescue teams. The casualty was confirmed safely out of the water and in the care of ambulance personnel by 11.10pm.

In the early hours of Thursday morning (28 August), emergency teams were called out again after concerns for the same individual this time joined by the Coastguard Helicopter from Solent.

At 2,22an Brighton RNLI launched once more to carry out a shoreline search between Brighton Marina and Palace Pier, supported by Shoreham and Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Teams and the Coastguard search and rescue helicopter.

A full search of the area was completed before the operation was stood down at 4.39am.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said:

“HM Coastguard assisted police with the response to an incident in the Brighton Beach area this morning, 28 August. Alerted at around 2.15am, Shoreham and Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Teams, a lifeboat from Brighton RNLI and a coastguard search and rescue helicopter were sent to assist.”
