A Liverpool primary school was placed in lockdown this morning after a man wearing a balaclava opened fire on a taxi in broad daylight.
Police were called to York Terrace in Everton at around 11:15am after witnesses reported a man riding a Sur-Ron electric bike fired two shots at a black Hackney cab before fleeing the scene.
The masked gunman reportedly sped off in the direction of Everton Valley. There have been no reports of injuries, and the taxi is believed to have driven away from the gunfire.
School Placed in Lockdown
Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School, which sits close to the scene, was placed in lockdown as a precaution on the advice of Merseyside Police.
In a message to parents, a school spokesperson said:
“Due to a police incident outside of school, we have been advised by police to keep all children indoors and there is currently no access to school. All children are safe and well.”
A receptionist confirmed to reporters that “everyone is safe in school”, while armed officers and forensic teams secured the scene and searched for evidence.
Police Appeal for Information
Chief Inspector Andy Hughes described the shooting as a “reckless act” that could have easily led to tragedy:
“The investigation is in the early stages but this was clearly a reckless act in a residential area in broad daylight.
At this stage, we have not received any information to suggest anyone has been injured, but urgent enquiries are being carried out to trace the taxi and identify the bike rider.”
“We would ask anyone who was in the area of York Terrace or Northumberland Terrace at around 11am today who saw the bike or has any further information or dashcam footage which could assist us to get in touch.”
“We know all too well that tragedies can occur when people choose to arm themselves with guns, and it is vital that the public comes forward and tells us what they know so we can take immediate and positive action.”
