A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after three men were injured in a knife attack in Reading town centre in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Thames Valley Police said officers were called to St Mary’s Butts at around 3.25am on Sunday, August 10, following reports of a serious assault.

A man in his late teens, a man in his 20s, and a man in his 30s were attacked with a knife by another man. All three sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital.

Police confirmed the teenager has since been discharged, while the other two victims remain in hospital receiving treatment.

A 34-year-old man from Reading was arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.

Large parts of St Mary’s Butts, Castle Street, and Reading Minster Churchyard have been cordoned off while forensics teams conduct enquiries. An increased police presence is expected to remain in the area.

Detective Inspector Sally Russell said:

“We know this attempted murder will cause concern, but we are investigating it as a high priority. There is a large scene-watch in place in St Mary’s Butts, so people will see an increased police presence while officers and staff carry out enquiries.

“We believe there may have been numerous witnesses, including those with mobile phone footage of the incident or its aftermath. Please send any footage or photos directly to us via our dedicated online portal instead of sharing on social media.”

Bus routes through St Mary’s Butts have been diverted due to the ongoing cordon, and police have urged the public to be patient while the investigation continues.
