Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, has revealed the introduction of temporary reading limits on the platform in response to concerns over data scraping and system manipulation. Musk took to Twitter to announce the new measures, which will limit the number of posts users can read per day.
According to Musk, verified accounts will have a daily limit of 6,000 posts, while unverified accounts will be restricted to 600 posts. New unverified accounts will only be able to view 300 posts per day. The implementation of these limits aims to address the “extreme levels” of data scraping and manipulation that have been observed on the platform.
Shortly after the announcement, users started reporting issues, with some receiving a “rate limit exceeded” message when trying to access Twitter. This led to the phrase “RIP Twitter” trending on the platform. The duration of these temporary limits has not been specified by Musk.
The introduction of reading limits follows Twitter’s recent decision to require users to have an account in order to view tweets. This move was described by Musk as a “temporary emergency measure.” Musk’s takeover of Twitter was finalized in October 2022, and he introduced a payment system for verified accounts, commonly known as “blue ticks,” in April.
As Twitter continues to address concerns related to data scraping and manipulation, these temporary reading limits are seen as a measure to protect the integrity of the platform. Users will have to adapt to these new restrictions until further updates or changes are announced by Musk and the Twitter team.
