Emergency services rushed to Shoebury Common Beach in Southend after a boat capsized at sea, leaving two people in need of rescue.
A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched, involving an HM Coastguard helicopter, two RNLI lifeboats, and assistance from Essex Police, fire services, and the ambulance service. One person managed to swim to shore on their own, while the other, who was in a more serious condition, was winched into a helicopter and flown to hospital by air ambulance.
The incident took place earlier today off the Thames estuary, and authorities have confirmed that both individuals are now receiving medical care. One of the casualties remains in serious condition.
