A major emergency rescue operation is underway at Beachy Head near Eastbourne, after a vehicle reportedly drove off the cliff edge this afternoon.

Emergency services were called at approximately 4:30pm following reports that a car had toppled over the cliffside and landed near the shoreline below. The driver, who is believed to have attempted to take their own life, has survived the fall but is trapped in the wreckage—partially submerged in water.

Multi-Agency Rescue Effort

The incident has prompted a full-scale response involving Eastbourne RNLI Lifeboat, HM Coastguard teams, fire crews, and specialist cutting equipment. The operation is focused on freeing the driver, who remains entrapped in the vehicle below the cliffs.
