A Police Dog Handler Has Been Given The Queen's Police Medal For His Outstanding Service To Northamptonshire Police

 

PC Ian McDonald received the honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, which marks the Platinum Jubilee this year.

Ian began his career with Northamptonshire Police in 2000, progressing to a proactive team in 2001 and then to CID as a certified detective.

He joined the Dog Section in 2006 and presently works with search and rescue dog Alfie (shown with Ian) and general purpose dog Mac.

Ian plays an important role in training the Force’s specialised canines, ensuring that they are ready to respond to crises as they occur.

“I was astonished to receive the call to say I’ve been granted the QPM but am honoured to be recognised,” Ian stated after learning of his honour.

It’s a pleasure to work with such a fantastic team of officers; I’m quite pleased of what we do.

I’d want to use this time to express my heartfelt gratitude to my wife and children, who have been there for me through thick and thin during my career.

Ian is a highly regarded and well-liked officer within Northamptonshire Police and has never compromised or accepted anything less than the highest standards in himself or his dogs,” said Chief Constable Nick Adderley.

“He has been praised throughout his career for his unwavering bravery, perseverance, and desire to seek justice, save lives, and protect people from harm.”

In two different occasions, his actions saved lives by identifying vulnerable missing persons and rescuing two people from burning automobiles.” He rescued the life of a woman who had life-threatening injuries and was able to assist in the emergency attempts to remove individuals in danger during a nightclub crush in which two people tragically died. His acts uphold the highest traditions of the emergency services, saving lives and limbs.

Ian is a very devoted police officer, unwavering in his desire to combat crime and protect people.” He demonstrates exceptional leadership skills and motivates all who work with him, establishing a real level of professionalism and leadership.
