A body has been recovered from the River Itchen in Southampton nearly a week after an extensive search was launched for a missing man.
The Coastguard search began last Sunday, October 6, following a report of a man missing in the area. Multiple helicopters, including search and rescue teams, RNLI lifeboats, and Coastguard teams, scoured the river for over 12 hours.
Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that a body was found near the Itchen Bridge just after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 12.
A spokesperson for the police said: “Formal identification has yet to take place, but the family of the missing man who had been searched for since October 7 have been notified.
Despite helicopters returning to base earlier in the week, police continued their search efforts. The man’s identity and further personal details have not been released.
The multi-agency search involved lifeboats from Calshot and Cowes, as well as rescue teams from Hill Head and Lymington, and the South Central Ambulance Service. An RNLI spokesperson stated, “The lifeboat was launched at 5:25 a.m. and proceeded to search the River Itchen from Southampton Water to Northam Bridge.
No further details are available at this time as the investigation continues.
