Starting today, March 11, BBC iPlayer users will no longer be able to download content onto specific devices, marking a significant change in the streaming service’s functionality.

In line with previous announcements, BBC iPlayer confirmed that certain devices will no longer support the regular download of shows or films for offline viewing. While popular streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney Plus continue to offer download options, BBC iPlayer is implementing changes to its download feature starting today.

Affected Devices:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11
  • MacBook Pro
  • MacBook Air
  • MacBooks

The decision to discontinue the download feature on these devices was previously communicated by the BBC, stating that the Desktop Downloads App would undergo closure. As of today, downloading programs from a computer or laptop via BBC iPlayer will be unavailable. However, users can still access and watch existing downloads until April 8, 2024.

Additionally, users can continue to download their favorite programs on mobile devices and add programs to their Watchlist for future viewing.

Timeline of Changes:

  • February 2: Affected devices were blocked from downloading the BBC iPlayer app.
  • March 11: Discontinuation of download feature on specified devices.
  • April 8: Complete cessation of BBC iPlayer functionality on affected devices.

While the download feature will no longer be available on certain devices, smartphones and tablets, including iPhones, Samsung Galaxy devices, and iPads, remain unaffected. Users can still download shows and films on these devices, ensuring continued access to BBC iPlayer content on-the-go.

The decision to sunset the download feature on select devices reflects ongoing changes in streaming technology and user preferences. As BBC iPlayer adapts to these shifts, users are encouraged to explore alternative methods for accessing and enjoying their favorite BBC programs.

For further updates and information, users are advised to stay tuned to official announcements from BBC iPlayer.
