Body Recovered from Southampton Water in Operation Involving Red Funnel Ferries

Two Red Funnel ferries were involved in a recovery operation this morning in Southampton Water after a body was discovered floating near Calshot Spit.

The incident unfolded shortly before 10:00 when the crew of the Red Osprey, traveling from East Cowes to Southampton, spotted an object in the water. After alerting HM Coastguard, the ferry turned around and remained in the area to assist while emergency services were dispatched.

Response and Recovery

The Red Kestrel, a freight ferry, relieved the Red Osprey to stand by as Calshot RNLI volunteers recovered the body. The recovery was conducted using the RNLI’s inshore lifeboat, and the body has since been brought ashore.

The Red Osprey resumed its journey to Southampton, arriving approximately 45 minutes behind schedule. The delays are expected to have a ripple effect on other sailings throughout the day.

Updates

At 10:30, the Red Kestrel was reported to have resumed its route to Southampton, with normal ferry operations resuming gradually.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have not yet released further details about the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding the discovery. The incident is under investigation by local authorities and HM Coastguard.

Passengers on the affected sailing have been informed of the delay, and Red Funnel has issued an apology for any inconvenience caused.
