Meeching Road in Newhaven was closed for several hours on Tuesday (19 August) after firefighters and police attended a serious incident at a property near the town centre.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) confirmed they were called shortly after 8am to reports of a blaze inside a building on Meeching Road, just 50 metres from Newhaven Fire Station.
Police later revealed that a number of cannabis plants were found inside the property. Officers confirmed that no injuries were reported, and enquiries into the discovery are ongoing.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said:“Police are investigating after cannabis plants were discovered at the scene of a fire in Newhaven. East Sussex Fire and Rescue alerted police at 8.13am on August 19, after they were called to a building in Meeching Road. There are no reports of any injuries. No arrests have been made, and enquiries are ongoing.”

Meeching Road was closed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident, but has since fully reopened.
