Thick smoke billowed over Holborn near the station yesterday (November 26) as emergency services flooded the scene. Firefighters tackled a dangerous fire that had broken out below street level on Theobalds Road, close to Southampton Row. The source? High-voltage electrical cables ablaze beneath the road.

The fire sparked a tricky, hazardous operation that forced Southampton Row to close completely in both directions between High Holborn and Vernon Place. The closure remains in place today (November 27) as investigations continue.
Transport chaos hits central London
Several major bus routes, including the 1, 14, 19, 38, 55, 59, 68, 133, and SL6, have been diverted away from the area. Drivers and commuters faced heavy delays and serious gridlock yesterday, with no sign of easing today amid ongoing road closures.
No injuries but disruption to continue, say fire chiefs
London Fire Brigade described the incident as a “prolonged operation” due to the tricky underground fire. Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters battled the blaze from 9.41am until 2.07pm when it was brought under control. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Station Commander Paul Morgan warned: “The incident is still causing significant disruption in central London, with multiple road closures and a safety cordon currently in place. Several bus routes have been diverted, and the public are advised to continue to avoid the area where possible.”
