A concerning number of UK drivers are putting themselves and others at risk by neglecting tyre safety checks and failing to understand when tyres become illegal and unsafe, research by the RAC and charity TyreSafe reveals.

The findings show that only 39% of drivers know the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, leaving a majority potentially driving on unsafe tyres. Drivers found with illegal tyres risk fines of £2,500 per tyre and three penalty points, yet awareness of these penalties remains alarmingly low.
Dangerous Oversights in Tyre Maintenance
The research highlights troubling habits among drivers:
- 26% check tyre tread only sporadically or before a scheduled MOT.
- 5% never check their tyres, waiting until they fail roadworthiness tests.
- Only 33% of drivers check tyres monthly, with many citing forgetfulness or reliance on mechanics as reasons for neglect.
Of those failing to check their tyres regularly, 50% admitted it simply “doesn’t cross their mind”, while 40% rely on mechanics or garages, which may not occur often enough to ensure safety.
Call for Change
Almost half of drivers (48%) said they would be prompted to check tyres more frequently if vehicles had a reminder system built into in-car displays. However, 34% of those surveyed said nothing would change their habits, highlighting the need for increased awareness and education.
