PD Billy Tracks Down Bognor Drugs and Knife Suspect ?

In the early hours of November 28, 2023, Sussex Police’s canine unit sprang into action. Reports of drug dealing and antisocial behaviour in Bognor Regis prompted an intensified patrol in the residential areas of Hastings Close and Trinity Way.

Enter PD Billy, a five-year-old German Shepherd who’s been with the force since he was just eight months old. When officers spotted a hooded figure fleeing into the darkness around 1:10 am, they unleashed Billy’s expert tracking skills. Within moments, the suspect was located hiding between two properties—a remarkable demonstration of canine agility and training.

Billy’s assistance didn’t stop there. Once the suspect was in custody, officers discovered a concealed bag containing cannabis, scales, “deal bags” and, crucially, a knife wedged beneath concrete slabs in the alleyway—all thanks to Billy’s keen nose.

The suspect, later identified as 20‑year‑old James Boden, of Queens Field West, Bognor, faced trial at Worthing Magistrates’ Court. On March 12, he pled guilty to possession of a bladed article in public and possession of cannabis after running from police.

At his sentencing hearing on July 3, Boden received a community order. He must complete 120 hours of unpaid work, cover £150 in court costs, and pay a £114 surcharge.

This incident underscores the vital role of police dogs in modern law enforcement. PD Billy’s performance not only ensured a swift arrest but also led to the seizure of illegal items—an important win in the fight against drug-related crime and public safety threats.

He exemplifies the “nose, speed, and vigilance” that makes police dogs such valuable allies. Sussex Police’s canine colleagues continue to be on the front line in safeguarding communities across the county.
