Devon & Cornwall Police have appealed for information after a police van had its fuel pipe cut and its brakes tampered with in Newquay. The reckless act put the lives of police officers and members of the public at risk and was it only thanks to a vigilant police officer that nobody was seriously hurt or killed. The marked Ford Transit vehicle is believed to have been targeted sometime between 15:30 hours on Wednesday 15th April and 9.30am the following day.
The police van had been left in a designated police parking space located outside of Newquay Police station, next to the town’s railway station in Tolcarne Road. An officer attending an incident realised that there was a serious problem with the vehicle after spotting a large pool of fuel under the van. The police van was then recovered by a force mechanic who established that the fuel pipe had been cut and that the rear brake pipe had been tampered with. Inspector Guy Blackford said: “This deliberate act could have resulted in a serious accident involving officers and members of the public. “We were fortunate that officers spotted the damage early in their shift.”
