Direct Rail Link from Eastbourne to London Restored After Four-Year Campaign
A long-awaited direct rail link between Eastbourne, Lewes, and London Bridge is set to return this December, bringing relief to commuters after a four-year gap.
Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has confirmed the reinstatement of a morning weekday service from Eastbourne to London, with an evening return. The move follows years of lobbying by local residents and political figures, including Eastbourne MP Josh Babarinde, who heralded the announcement as a “huge victory” for the town.
Mr Babarinde, who led a highly visible campaign that included presenting a giant train-ticket-shaped petition at Eastbourne station, said the restoration would have a “positive impact” on the local economy and commuting life.

Thameslink’s customer services director Jenny Saunders said the company was committed to encouraging passengers back to rail, describing it as the “most sustainable form of public transport.”
She acknowledged the lasting effects of the pandemic on rail operations, but said this new service demonstrates the operator’s determination to rebuild and invest in commuter confidence.
