The drones, equipped with thermal imaging cameras, are being used to deter and detect any further criminal activity along these routes, following reports of objects striking moving vehicles on Thursday evening, November 7, 2024.

The first incident on the A2 occurred around 5:50 p.m. when objects were reportedly fired from an area adjacent to the carriageway, damaging the windows and bodywork of several vehicles. Later that evening, between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., drivers on the M20 reported similar damage, believed to have been caused by items falling from a nearby bridge. While the two incidents have not been linked, police have responded with increased patrols, including unmarked vehicles, to monitor the affected areas.

Chief Inspector Craig West of Kent Police condemned the acts, emphasizing the severe risks associated with targeting moving traffic. “Throwing or firing items at moving traffic is incredibly dangerous, and it is fortunate nobody was injured as a result of either of these incidents. Anyone found to have been responsible for putting road users in danger can expect to be arrested and brought before the courts,” he stated.

The drone patrols allow officers to monitor footpaths and wooded areas near the roads, enabling rapid response to suspicious activity. In addition to regular patrols, volunteer officers from the Special Constabulary are also assisting in crime prevention efforts.
