A Bulgarian HGV driver has been arrested after being found highly intoxicated while stopped on the hard shoulder of the M4 motorway.
Officers from the Roads Policing Unit attended the scene after the heavy goods vehicle was spotted pulled over. Upon investigating, officers administered a roadside breath test, which returned a staggering reading of 100mg – nearly three times the legal alcohol limit for drivers.
Immediate Action Taken
The driver was promptly arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, and the HGV was removed from the motorway to a safe location to prevent further danger to other road users. Authorities emphasized that the quick response potentially averted a major disaster.
In a statement, police said:
“Keeping dangerous drivers off the roads is vital for public safety. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by irresponsible behaviour behind the wheel.”
Public Safety Reminder
Motorists are reminded that professional drivers, especially those operating heavy goods vehicles, are held to even stricter alcohol limits due to the catastrophic risks posed by impaired driving.
The standard drink-driving limit in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The driver in this case recorded almost three times that amount.
Ongoing Investigations
The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have confirmed that he could face a lengthy driving ban, a substantial fine, and possible imprisonment if convicted.
Motorway Safety Campaigns
Road safety groups have praised the Roads Policing Unit for their vigilance, noting that incidents like this underscore the importance of maintaining strong police visibility on the UK’s motorways.
