Fire crews abandon Birthday Party to attend Care home a blaze Sandown

Firefighters from multiple stations across the Isle of Wight are attending a fire at the former care home in Sandown this evening (Wednesday)The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised shortly before 10pm and currently, more than 4 appliances are on the scene. Firefighters are understood to be searching the building wearing breathing apparatus as it has been reported by neighbours that the property may be being used as a squat. Crews have been using three two hose reels and one jet. Six firefighters have been committed into the building. Fire appliances from Bembridge, Sandown Newport and Shanklin have been called to the incident. ALong with the Command and control unit from Newport and an aerial ladder platform. Due to the swift actions of the first crews attending in knocking back the fire, it stopped the spread to the roof of the vacant property. One crew from Shanklin had to leave a firefighters birthday in response to the incident. Fire investigators have been called to the incident as it is understood that the cause of the blaze is doubtful.
