CFire crews are currently battling a significant field fire in Orpington that has spread over three hectares of hay.
Four fire engines and approximately 25 firefighters are at the scene of the blaze on Charmwood Lane. The fire, which began at 12:23 pm, has been reported to be spreading rapidly, but crews are making good progress in containing it.
Extensive Resources Deployed
Firefighters from Orpington, Bromley, Sidcup, and Biggin Hill stations are all involved in the operation. The London Fire Brigade’s newly introduced All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicle is also being utilized. This specialized vehicle can pump about 1,000 liters of water and is designed to reach remote locations, making it particularly useful for tackling grass fires.
A Wildfire Support Officer is on the scene to advise the Incident Commander, enhancing the coordinated effort to extinguish the fire.
Safety Measures and Precautions
Given the hot weather conditions, firefighters have been provided with extra hydration packs, sun cream, and protective headwear to ensure their safety while combating the blaze.
London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner for Prevention and Protection, Craig Carter, emphasized the importance of proper rubbish disposal and ensuring cigarettes are fully extinguished to prevent such fires.

We know many Londoners will want to enjoy the nice weather by visiting a park or open space,” said Assistant Commissioner Carter. “However, we’re asking people not to take disposable barbecues with them as they can cause grass fires, especially in hot weather when the ground is dry. These fires are unpredictable and can spread rapidly, causing a significant amount of damage.”
He also advised against using barbecues on balconies due to the potential fire risk posed by combustible materials.
“If you are having a barbecue, never leave it unattended and be careful where it’s positioned. Aim for level ground and keep barbecues well away from anything flammable like sheds, fences, trees, or tents,” Carter added.
