Police in Northern Ireland have apprehended five individuals in connection with a series of reports concerning bogus charity collectors targeting members of the public. The arrests were made on Thursday, July 13, after a vehicle was stopped in the Victoria Road area of Armagh.
During a search of the car, various items, including clipboards, were seized by the police. As a result, four men aged 30, 33, 39, and 48, along with a 30-year-old woman, were taken into custody on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
Reports of individuals claiming to represent local charities and soliciting money from the public have surfaced across several regions in Northern Ireland. In response to these incidents, Inspector Browne has advised the public to exercise caution and remain vigilant. If individuals are uncertain about the authenticity of charity collectors, they should not hesitate to request identification. Genuine collectors will not be offended by such inquiries.
Furthermore, if doubts persist, individuals are encouraged to call 101, where they will have the option of being directed to the Quick Check facility. Trained police call handlers will gather the details provided by the caller regarding the company the collector claims to represent. If any suspicions arise or the operator deems the situation suspicious, the police will be promptly contacted.
The public can also relay information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by dialling 0800 555 111. The collaboration between law enforcement and the community is crucial in combating fraud and ensuring the safety of individuals.
