A four-hectare grass fire broke out in a field behind Slade Green station this afternoon, prompting a significant response from emergency services.
The fire, located on Whitehall Lane, required four fire engines and approximately 25 firefighters to bring it under control. The first emergency call was received at 2.36pm on August 9, with London Fire Brigade Control Officers receiving over 30 calls about the incident.
Firefighters from Sidcup, Bexley, and Plumstead Fire Stations, along with assistance from Kent Fire & Rescue Service, responded to the scene and managed to control the blaze by 3.57pm.
The fire occurred on a day when London experienced temperatures exceeding 20°C, conditions that significantly increase the risk of grass fires. In response to the incident, the London Fire Brigade has issued a reminder for the public to follow safety guidelines to protect themselves and their property during warm periods.
Craig Carter, London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner for Prevention and Protection, emphasized the dangers associated with using disposable barbecues in parks or open spaces, particularly during hot and dry weather.
We know many Londoners will want to enjoy the nice weather by visiting a park or open space,” Carter said. However, we’re asking people not to take disposable barbecues with them as they can cause grass fires, especially in hot weather when the ground is dry. These fires are unpredictable and can spread rapidly, causing a significant amount of damage.
He also warned against barbecuing on balconies due to the presence of combustible materials, which can pose a risk to both those barbecuing and others living nearby.
“If you are having a barbecue, never leave it unattended and be careful where it’s positioned,” Carter advised. Aim for level ground and keep barbecues well away from anything flammable like sheds, fences, trees, or tents.
