M20 Motorway Closure Cancelled Due to Storm Warnings

A planned closure of the M20 motorway at junction 1 this weekend has been cancelled due to severe storm warnings. The closure was originally scheduled to allow for the installation of a new 350-metre central reservation safety barrier, but forecasted strong winds have made the operation unsafe.

Cancellation Details

The closure, which was to run from 10 PM on Friday, 6 December, to 5:30 AM on Monday, 9 December, was cancelled after safety concerns were raised about the lifting operations required to install the new sections of the barrier.

Traffic had been planned to be redirected via exit and entry slip roads, with adjustments to traffic signals at the Swanley Interchange to manage flow.

National Highways Statement

Amelia Yeodal, Programme Development Manager at National Highways, explained:

“Our work here will improve safety for those using this section of the M20. We carefully plan all our work to keep disruption to a minimum. However, the forecasted strong winds pose a significant risk to the lifting operations needed for this project.

“We appreciate people’s understanding and patience and will provide updates on the rescheduled works as soon as possible.”

Planned Improvements

The safety upgrade is aimed at enhancing the central reservation barrier, which is designed to improve safety and reduce the need for frequent maintenance. Once completed, the new barrier is expected to provide long-term benefits for road users.

Updates and Future Work

National Highways has confirmed that updates on the rescheduling of the work will be provided as soon as the situation allows. In the meantime, drivers are advised to stay informed about weather conditions and traffic updates, particularly with severe storms forecast over the weekend.

This decision underscores the importance of prioritizing safety for workers and motorists alike during adverse weather conditions.
